Atomic cinematography: from the Lumière Brothers cinema to X-ray lasers
The physical properties of materials, such as color, conductivity, magnetism…, are linked to their molecular, atomic and electronic organizations, which can be controlled by light in an ultra-fast fashion. Understanding these mechanisms requires literally filming atoms on a timescale of less than a millionth of a millionth of a second. Such a feat is made possible by X-ray lasers, particle accelerators several kilometers long, using a method similar to the cinematograph developed by the Lumières brothers.
