A double revolution is emerging in biology in the 21st century: microbes are everywhere, and they weave, beyond disease or decomposition, vital relationships whose benefits are mutual, with the largest organisms. Plants cannot exist without microbes, bacteria or fungi; animals (starting with ourselves) wouldn't be what they are without the microbes that colonize them. Even our cultural evolution has relied on microbes, for example in food! Plants, animals and ecosystems are “never alone”: microbes build the world around us.

Marc-André Selosse, Professor at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris and at the universities of Gdansk (Poland) and Kunming (China). His research focuses on the ecology and evolution of plants and fungi.
