A double revolution is emerging in biology in this 21st century: microbes are everywhere, and they weave, beyond disease or decomposition, vital relationships whose benefits are mutual, with the largest organisms. Plants cannot exist without microbes, bacteria or fungi; animals (starting with ourselves) wouldn't be what they are without the microbes that colonize them. Even our cultural evolution has relied on microbes, for example in food! Plants, animals and ecosystems are "never alone": microbes build the world around us.
