A quick look at the Tourist Office website, discover the “Greeters” page, make an appointment orchestrated by Victoria or Edouard and hey presto the meeting with Serge is arranged for a 100% local walk with a local guy. Are you familiar with the term “Greeter”?Serge either ! A 100% English-speaking term for meeting 100% Breton people, what an idea! So we can say meeting a local, not very flattering; meeting an ambassador, ooh what prestige! A simple stroll, with a passionate person, that’s what greeters offer us! Here the appointment is made and we meet in front of the Tourist Office in Saint-Malo for a stroll through the streets of Intra-Muros with Serge.
We take turns introducing ourselves, and it’s off to a great start, as the humour is all there! We’re not in a group, we’re with friends, family … These walks are limited to 6 participants.
First stop, the Château de Saint-Malo, where Serge’s wanderings and research have led him to discover a number of little curiosities.
It’s fascinating because you can tell straight away that Serge loves his town and has a keen interest in its history. We learn a lot about the city, but we also get a laugh out of the anecdotes and stories. Did you know that there was a water supply in the courtyard of the château? Well, I didn’t, even though I know the history of Saint-Malo!
Serge shows us his binder with reproductions, maps… All his research on the town. As he says, he shows us his pictures because we are “as wise as pictures”.
In front of the Univers bar, we learn that Serge is a grandson of Cap-Hornier. That this bar served as the sailors’ HQ, we can immediately imagine his grandfather telling his stories at the counter as Serge does now. The heritage is there!
We continue our stroll through the streets of Intra-Muros to meet the houses… We take the time to enter the courtyard of the Houssaye where the Duchess Anne would not have stayed at all after all. Then we stop in front of a figurehead and Serge tells us that in the old days the sailors had to fight over the right to clean the lady. We imagine the poor sailors at sea for months (if not years), with an all-male crew, fighting for the right of access to the only female image on the boat. And then, a shared giggle, everyone’s imagination and especially that of Edouard the only man taking part in this ride, who completely understands how the sailors feel!
We’re close to our “local guy”. We don’t see the time go by … We walked around for nearly 2 hours. Because with such infectious good humour, he was able to pass onhis passion for his city of Saint-Malo to us. He took us on a storytelling walk, told in his words and his feelings.
We all have a great memory of this moment shared with Serge! From the little stories he told us and, above all, from his down-home humour.
