Over 2 kilometres, 11 locks follow one another every 200 metres, enabling boats to negotiate a 27-metre difference in height.

1.

Le Canal d’Ille-et-Rance

In 1804, construction began on a canal that was almost destined for you. Of course, at the time, it was a strategic decision by Napoleon Bonaparte in response to a British naval blockade: it was intended to carry goods between Rennes and Saint-Malo. Then, at the beginning of the 20th century, the railway and the roads put an end to its first life. Now it has a very different vocation: transporting emotions!

2.

The 11 locks

Witness an unusual spectacle and proof of true technical prowess: over 2 kilometres, 11 locks follow one another every 200 metres, enabling boats to cross 27 metres of difference in height. Operated manually by the lock-keepers, share in the adventure of these modern-day bargemen. This site promises an unparalleled stroll along the water, whether on foot, by bike, kayak or boat.

3.

La Rigole de Boulet

14 km long, the Rigole de Boulet, built by human hands has been feeding the Canal d’Ille-et-Rance for nearly 200 years. It’s the perfect place to take a stroll along the paths, in the shade of the trees and in the heart of the lush green countryside. Take a moment to stroll along the water’s edge.

4.

La Maison du Canal

Discover the secrets of the 11-lock site by visiting the Magdeleine lock house. Relive the history of the locks and the Ille-et-Rance canal, from its construction to the present day, as you explore the scale models and learn more about our heritage in the exhibitions. For younger visitors, fun and interactive activities promise an instructive journey back in time.

5.

Religious heritage

Québriac’s twisted bell tower: Unusual: Stop off in the village and admire the church of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul. It has one of the few twisted bell towers in Europe: erected in the 17th century, the bell tower is not twisted, but actually twisted by an 8th of a turn!
A surprising discovery for architecture lovers! The church of Saint-Ouen, built in the 15th century, is in the flamboyant Gothic style. Its stained glass windows illustrate the art of stained glass in the 16th century. The church is one of the few to have a parish enclosure.

6.

La Route du lin et du Chanvre

Take a step back in time to the days of the weavers as you pass through the communes of Les Iffs, Cardroc and Saint-Brieuc-des-Iffs. A walk around flax and hemp awaits you.
