Treasure n°8 Nuggets on the banks of the Rance

The banks of the Rance, with their picturesque landscapes, offer an ideal setting for walks. Not far from Saint-Suliac, discover the famous tide mills, witnesses to ancient know-how. These mills, which use variations in the tide to grind grain, are a marvel of traditional engineering. A stroll along the banks of the Rance will allow you to immerse yourself in local history, while enjoying magnificent views of this iconic waterway.

The Quinard tidal mill

It stands facing you. Built during the 19th century, it is 47 metres long! Thanks to the power of the tides, it produced flour that was transported to coastal towns and Dinan. This was the largest of the Ranc mills: at the end of the 19th century, a steam engine was installed to relay the tidal power. The mill ceased to operate in 1925.

The Beauchet mill

Originally made entirely of wood, it was rebuilt in stone after a fire in the 19th century. Electricity was introduced in 1957, marking the end of tidal power. The mill, its mechanism and its dyke are listed as Historic Monuments.

Les îles de la Rance

At La Ville aux oiseaux, a lovely viewpoint over La Rance, on its left bank, over Ile Harteau (the largest) and Ile Notre-Dame. On this island, a fire was kept burning at night to guide the boats. Today it is a protected nature reserve that is home to stone terns (black-headed, grey-backed palmiped bird).

Le plage du Vallion

Located in the commune of Saint-Jouan des Guerêts,le Vallion is a small country beach on the banks of the Rance. The beach is embellished with a wooden pontoon and offers pretty views of the other bank of the Rance.

Les anciennes salines des guettes

North-west of Beauchet, you can see the vestiges of the settling basins protected by a dike. These are theformer salt marshes of Les Guettes, built in 1736 and gradually abandoned in the 19th century. A farm was then established on the polder at the end of the 19th century. You may be lucky enough to spot: little egret, grey heron, herring gull, cormorant…

Navigate on the Rance

Go and meet the banks of the river Rancee. You’ll see old shipyards, fishing ports alive with the comings and goings of boats. There are plenty of walks to be had, take the time to navigate the Rance, a life-size change of scenery is just around the corner!
