Definition of a chambre d’hôtes

Article L 324-3 of the French Tourism Code defines chambres d’hôtes as rooms furnished in the home of the owner with a view to welcoming tourists, for consideration, for one or more nights, with services provided.
The chambre(s) d’hôtes must be located in the owner’s house or flat. The rental of a chambre d’hôte includes the provision of one night’s accommodation and breakfast. The guest is the host. Guest rooms are limited to 5 rooms for a maximum capacity of 15 people. Each guest room has access (directly or indirectly) to a shower room and WC. They must comply with health, safety and hygiene regulations. Unlike furnished tourist accommodation, bed and breakfast accommodation cannot be given a star rating, but only a label (or certification).
Quality labels have been developed to qualify the services offered by service providers who comply with official quality standards and to indicate to consumers the quality of a service. A label is a guarantee of quality and comfort that reassures customers about environmental, comfort and equipment requirements, in compliance with the quality charter specific to each label.
