A technical feat
How do you enable boats to cross 27 metres of difference in level?
By building a succession of 11 locks over just over 2km, i.e. one every 200m on average, a veritable aquatic lift! This unusual sight can be witnessed in Hédé-Bazouges, a small commune on the banks of the Ille et Rance canal.
Here, the locks are still manually operated and each one has its own Napoleonic-style lockhouse and its own name: la Ségerie, la Malabrie, la Pechetière, la Charbonnerie, la Parfaire, la maison numéro 26, la Jaunaie, la Madelaine, la petite Madeleine, la Guéhardière, la Dialais. The best way to find out more about the site and its works is to visit the Canal House. Exhibitions and models retrace the history of the canal and locks.
