Here, on the Ille-et-Rance canal, we are deploying a veritable river Ariadne’s thread. A technical feat that now gives way to charm and tranquillity!

The eleven locks

Discover an exceptional site, a remarkable example of human ingenuity.

A technical feat

How do you enable boats to cross 27 metres of difference in level?
By building a succession of 11 locks over just over 2km, i.e. one every 200m on average, a veritable aquatic lift! This unusual sight can be witnessed in Hédé-Bazouges, a small commune on the banks of the Ille et Rance canal.

Here, the locks are still manually operated and each one has its own Napoleonic-style lockhouse and its own name: la Ségerie, la Malabrie, la Pechetière, la Charbonnerie, la Parfaire, la maison numéro 26, la Jaunaie, la Madelaine, la petite Madeleine, la Guéhardière, la Dialais. The best way to find out more about the site and its works is to visit the Canal House. Exhibitions and models retrace the history of the canal and locks.

Walk along the water

Following the towpath that runs along either side of the canal, a bucolic walk awaits you to enjoy the perspective of the locks and the surrounding nature. By bike, the “voie verte” and the footpaths, which are very popular in fine weather, allow you to cycle along the canal and enjoy some lovely stops along the water’s edge. By kayak or boat, let yourself be tempted by an aquatic excursion with the Romantic Brittany Canoe-Kayak Base.

One thing’s for sure, this unique site is sure to win you over!
