Combourg

Day 1: Welcome to Combourg, in the heart of romantic Brittany!

The precious Petite Cité de Caractère® can be visited at your own pace. You can feel the spirit of the writer François- René de Chateaubriand, precursor of Romanticism, everywhere, from the majestic castle in which he grew up, right up to Lac Tranquille which the 11th century building overlooks. Lose yourself in the narrow streets and immerse yourself in history: the timber-framed houses transport you back to the Middle Ages, while the Maisons de la Lanterne and the Templiers smack of cloak-and-dagger films! Then stroll along the shores of Lac Tranquille. Listen carefully: you can only hear the song of the birds that inhabit the lake and the wind blowing through the reeds and trees.

It feels really good, doesn’t it? You’re un-con-nected!

Dol-de-Bretagne & Mont-Dol

Day 2: A stop at the Menhir de Champ-Dolent in Dol-de-Bretagne is a must.

The megalith, one of the tallest in Brittany, is the starting point for your journey to discover the historical riches of the Petite Cité de Caractère®. Start with the impressive Cathédrale Saint-Samson and its interpretation centre, the Cathédraloscope. Take a stroll through the town: it’s the 21st century, really? Cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, porches and arcades tell an exceptional story. The Saturday morning market, with its succulent local produce, is not to be missed. Above all, don’t miss the tasting ofthe famous galette-saucisse!” In the afternoon, head for Mont-Dol, a village of legends with many nuggets: church with mural frescoes, chapel, mill. The 360° view over the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel and the marshes is breathtaking!

To round off the day, enjoy a guided tour of the local heritage or discover one of the Destination’s golf courses.

Channel & Heritage

Day 3: Heritage lovers, three discoveries are on offer for this final day! Castles steeped in history:

  • La Bourbansais and its zoological park,
  • The medieval fortress of Combourg,
  • Montmuran, where Bertrand Du Guesclin was knighted.

The precious religious heritage: the church of the Sainte-Trinité in Tinténiac with its mosaics by Odorico, that of Saint-Ouen-aux-Iffs with its magnificent 16th century stained glass windows, those of Cardroc or Saint Léger-des-Prés with their inverted boat hull ceilings. The impressive river maritime heritage: the 11 locks at Hédé-Bazouges which make up a water ladder allowing boats to cross a 27-metre difference in level. A technical feat and 200 years of river history to discover at the Maison du Canal, located in a former lock house. Having second thoughts? The bad news is that you won’t be able to do it all this time.

The good news is that you’ll be back…

Le Lac Tranquille in Combourg

“What a delight to stroll around Lac Tranquille, so named by François-René de Chateaubriand in his Mémoires d’Outretombe, which borders the town of Combourg. It’s an invitation to serenity, calm and, of course, romance. The view over the town and its castle is breathtaking, especially on sunny days when the reflections on the water give this Petite Cité de Caractère® a truly picture-postcard landscape. I like to take a book, sit by the lake and enjoy our magnificent city in this way.”
