Treasure n°6 Nuggets of stone around Combourg

In the heart of romantic Brittany, the forêt du Mesnil offers a peaceful setting ideal for nature walks. Nearby, the majestic Château de Pleugueneuc, known for its zoo and classical architecture, delights young and old alike. Not far away, the granit garden, a unique landscaped setting blending art and minerals, invites contemplation.

Three must-see places for a getaway combining discovery, relaxation and culture.

1.

The House of the Fairies

Under this name lies a Neolithic monument of importance. It is a burial chamber 14 metres long. The monument owes its name to one of the slabs in the burial chamber, whose 4 cylindrical engravings are said to represent two pairs of breasts. Two mysterious engravings that, according to specialists, suggest that the “mother goddess” was honoured here.

2.

The Granite Garden

The idea for the Granite Garden arose from two sculpture symposia in 1993 and 1994. Paul Hignard, then a granite worker and mayor of Lanhélin, wanted monumental sculptures made of Breton granite to be created. On this site, 15 sculptors from Ille-et-Vilaine, the Breton departments, but also from Paris and abroad, exhibit their works.

Château de Pleugueneuc

Built at the end of the 16th century, altered and extended in the 17th and 18th centuries, it is a fine example of the residences of the members of the Parliament of Brittany. A tour of part of the château reveals the richly decorated and furnished drawing rooms. French garden and zoological park of the Domaine de la Bourbansais.

4.

The Pierre-longue menhir

Classified as a Historic Monument, it is 6.50 metres high and 1.85 metres at its widest: its perimeter at the base reaches 7 metres wide. According to legend, the cross placed at the top of this menhir, which was Christianised in the 19th century, diverted the devil from his goal of taking the stone to complete the construction of his temple on the Rochefort moor in Trémeheuc.
