I know Dol-de-Bretagne, I live and work there, but here I discovered the history and also the mysteries of this town ...

Once upon a time, in Dol-de-Bretagne...

Meet at the Tourist Information Office near the Cathedral

I meet up with Dominique, our guide, and my other tour mates. We’re all here for one thing, to take a guided tour. Simple, you might say, but no, we got carried away by Dol – La Mystérieuse.

Because in Dol-de-Bretagne, we all know the Cathédrale Saint-Samson, but not everyone knows that this town has welcomed illustrious men!!

Let me tell you about it...

It all began with an appointment, Dominique is there and waiting impatiently for us, she can’t wait to get started!

We’re wisely waiting at the foot of Saint-Samson’s Cathedral and yes of course it’s with her that we begin our tour and immerse ourselves in the mysteries of Dol-de-Bretagne. Dominique directs us towards Square Nominoë, and we’re whisked away into the history of the Cathedral’s origins, its construction, wars and family stories!

We’re questioned, we observe, we discover … Dominique tells us about the legends and realities of a complex construction!

Then the wave of history, led by Dominique, takes us along the Cathedral, we arrive on the south side, this leaves time to ask questions to our guide. A little girl, asks her seriously why, since she said that the work had been completed, there is still scaffolding on the Cathedral… Absolute mystery and implacable logic!

We arrive at the level of a well … Not a single well, a double well! Dominique tells us that, following excavations, they discovered that the outside well is connected to a well inside the Cathedral.
Proof of this, Dominique shows us a sketch of this well. She tells us that you can go down it during the European Heritage Days. Once a year, the well is open to the public and you can go down it… And the icing on the cake is when she tells us about her experience of going down the well, where she shares with us her pleasure at the discovery… She had the chance and the joy, to go down on a Sunday morning and hear the mass chants from the well, we were captivated.

It even gives some people ideas: see you at the European Heritage Days!

We continue our visit, our walk, our stroll through the streets of Dole…

We stop in front of the canon’s house, we’re in rue Ceinte, rue ceinte and not holy as we might have thought. Because even though we’re standing in front of the canon’s house, this street wasn’t just for ecclesiastics!
Attention: the vice squad had better watch out, we’re in a street that used to be of dubious morals … And this street was once fenced off: ahhh you’re going to tell me, that’s why it has that name!
Yes, in Dol-de-Bretagne, as in many towns, the streets bear names linked to their history…

So, given that we’re deviants and that these days the street no longer has the same purpose we walk down Rue Ceinte to stop in front of old shops, one of the tour participants sits on the merchant’s seat, all in granite! Dominique, tells us what the shops were like in those days.

She tells us the significance of the colour of certain houses, the red “ox’s blood” intended to ward off the devil, among other things…

Then here we are talking about two great men who, in their own way, stayed in a hotel… Victor Hugo used to come there with Juliette Drouet and Chateaubriand who spent a night in his eternal sleep before returning to le Grand Bé à Saint-Malo, his final resting place… I’ll leave you to discover these stories with Dominique, I have to leave a little mystery to this visit!

Together we walk up rue Lejamptel, formerly known as the narrow street because, as you may have guessed, it was, back in the day!

A visit through the ages

We arrive at Place Chateaubriand, Yep, him again, and yes of course the writer… Dominique tells us that he spent his school years in Dol-de-Bretagne, just like me, we didn’t have the same career but hey….

We leave the square to enter a high place of mystery, with Dominique we cross eras, we leave Chateaubriand and the 19th century to find ourselves at the beginning of August 1945 … Liberation of Dol-de-Bretagne, where in a house, the town was saved from destruction!

We head off into the little streets, where Dominique leaves the mystery hanging, where is she taking us?! A passage, a dead end, we find ourselves in a small street surrounded by walls, we were not expecting this … There is little space, it’s all very mysterious!.

We really discover Dol-de-Bretagne differently …

Returning to the Great Street of the Stuarts, you know one of Scotland’s greatest families, the one that everyone (or almost everyone) knows, well necessarily they originate from Dol!!!

Again, Dominique tells us about his experience, shares his passion for this family, the Stuarts, tells us about his research, his discoveries … His travels in Scotland, the fact that if you say you’re from Dol-de-Bretagne, the Scots open their doors to you …

A stop must be made in front of the oldest house in Brittany, the Maison des Petits Palets, where Dominique explains the various stages of its construction, the alterations due to the eras it has gone through, because it has gone through some eras, this old lady!

Dominique even shows us one of her discoveries in Scotland, in a chapel, she found the same symbols drawn on a vault as on this house.

Once again, the mystery of travelling architects…

And, in order to finish this visit properly,

we’re back at the foot of Saint-Samson’s Cathedral, and as they say “we’ve come full circle”, until the end Dominique takes us into history, with his stories and his cheerful speech!

The feedback from the participants is unanimous, captivating and perfect visit! Some wait until the end to congratulate Dominique.I can feel the joy and happiness in Dominique for having passed on her passion.

And another successful visit!

A word from our guide, Dominique :

“The desire to share history and heritage, the passion that drives me, comes from a guided tour I took a few years ago, during a summer family holiday.
