Treasure n°4 Nuggets from the biez and marshes

Around Dol-de-Bretagne,the Marais Blanc, the Biez and the Marais Noir form a group of remarkable wetlands. These landscapes shaped by water are home to exceptional biodiversity and bear witness to the historic link between nature, agriculture and hydraulic development in the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel.

A great place for walking, birdwatching and discovering a preserved natural heritage.


1.

The Marais Blanc

The Marais Blanc is the drained part of the marsh located just behind the dyke that has frozen the current coastline since the Middle Ages. It is part of the Dol marsh, which covers 12,000 hectares. It is made up of land composed of marine alluvium and clay, which gives it its light colour.

Le marais noir

The Marais Noir, consisting of peat, near Dol is part of the 12,000 hectare Marais de Dol. It is a Natura 2000 listed wetland, rich in biodiversity. With its reedbeds, wet meadows and remarkable wildlife, this natural site offers a peaceful setting ideal for observation and walking.

The Lillemer archaeological interpretation area

It presentsthe results of excavations carried out from 1997 to 2001 by means of explanatory panels, showcases, videos and workshops suitable for children.
Let’s discover the Neolithic, a pivotal period, when with the emergence of agriculture and animal husbandry the first farming communities appeared.

4.

Le Biez du milieu

Go along the Biez du Milieu, a canal that drains the marsh at this point below sea level, with typical reedbed landscapes that are home to special wildlife. Numerous stone (granite) bridges built to cross the main biez dot the landscape, such as those at Le Rosais and La Goutte. The middle biez, 3.5 km long, is marked by 2 locks at its ends.
