Treasure n°4 The nuggets of Dol and Mont-Dol

Situated between Saint-Malo and Mont-Saint-Michel, Dol-de-Bretagne captivates with its Saint-Samson cathedral, a Gothic gem, and its medieval centre steeped in history. A few kilometres away, Mont-Dol, granite promontory dominating the polders, offers an exceptional panorama of the bay. This legendary natural site is a must for lovers of heritage, nature and breathtaking views.

The Cathedral of Saint-Samson

Dedicated to Saint-Samson, a monk who arrived via the Guyoult, he was the 1st Bishop of Dol and built the original cathedral. Dating from the Middle Ages, then modified over the following centuries, the Cathedral we see today is an example of the emergence and evolution of the monumental Gothic style with the technical prowess of the time.

La Maison des Petits Palets

A 12th-century Romanesque gem, the Maison des Petits Palets is one of Brittany’s oldest civil buildings. With its sculpted arcades, it bears witness to the rich medieval past of Dol-de-Bretagne.

La Promenade Jules Revert

In the 13th century, a fortified wall with gates and moats was erected to protect Dol’s two fortresses. It was reinforced in the 14th and 15th centuries to withstand advances in artillery. The Motte tower and the Carmes tower are fine visible examples . This green space, completed in 2012, has made it possible to uncover part of the ramparts to the east, which until then had been buried under the spoil from the digging of the railway line.

The Guyoult Valley

Constituting a natural area that spans sixteen hectares, the Guyoult Valley offers a breathing space in the town. It features a sports trail made up of ten modules, three kilometres of paths that allow visitors to rediscover the essential role of water and the benefits of biodiversity as well as a few animals.

The Notre-Dame Tower and the Chapel of Hope

The Notre-Dame Tower was blessed in 1857. You can access the top of this tower, where you will have a magnificent view of the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. At the foot of the Tour Notre-Dame, the Chapelle de l’Espérance with its small stone campanile, is built on the foundations of an old Chappe telegraph.

The Devil’s Seat

Near the chapel, on the edge of the plateau, a imposing rock has on its front face a hollow: according to legend, it is the Devil’s Seat. “The Devil’s Footprint” present at the summit of Mont-Dol.
