Combourg, the cradle of romanticism

Day 1: Dive into the heart of heritage

Combourg, Petite Cité de Caractère®, your terminus! Your reserved bikes are waiting on the station platform. First stop: the Château de Combourg, a listed Historic Monument, where writer François-René de Chateaubriand grew up. The medieval fortress dominates the town and sets the tone for your heritage-focused visit. Perhaps you’ll hear the wooden leg of the local ghost clattering down the grand staircase? After lunch, head for Lake Tranquille and its literary trail in the footsteps of Chateaubriand. Combourg can be experienced in all seasons and can be visited independently. But nothing beats the expertise of a Destination guide, in July and August, to savour the treasures of the town: its half-timbered houses, its church, its history… A charming stroll through the cradle of Romanticism, which you can extend by spending the night. By the way, have you chosen to stay at the Château hotel-restaurant or the Goutte d’Or guest house?

Travel back in time to Dol-de-Bretagne

Day 2: Back to the era of the great builders

10 minutes is the time it takes to reach Dol-de-Bretagne by train. Near Saint-Samson Cathedral, a jewel of the 12th and 13th centuries, the Cathédraloscope takes you through the construction techniques of the builders. The cobbled streets lined with medieval houses lead you to the Stuart or Thé et Gourmandises,
nestling in timber-framed houses. You’ll think you’re back in the Middle Ages… La Grande Rue des Stuarts, a dynamic shopping street, is an invitation to shop that’s hard to resist. For your picnic, take a gourmet tour of Côté Vignoble’s epicurean shops before getting back in the saddle, to
Cherrueix and its sailing carts. Can you taste the unique sensation of gliding along the immense shores of Mont-Saint-Michel Bay, with the marvellous Mont-Saint-Michel on the horizon? Table and room at Les Demeures de Mont-Dol await you to end the day in calm and serenity.

A day between Dol-de-Bretagne and Saint-Malo

Day 3: Today, we’re going green!

At the gates of Dol-de-Bretagne, the Guyoult valley makes up a jewel box of biodiversity that’s a joy to walk through. You too will put your foot down to listen to the vocalizations of its many birds! A little further on the Champ-Dolent menhir, one of Brittany’s largest megaliths, stands majestically in the verdant landscape. The train takes you from Dol toLa Fresnais, in the heart of the marais blanc. This lunchtime, you’ll sample the tasty and inventive market cuisine of the chef at La Table du Marais, who is fond of
local and seasonal produce. You have time to visit the beautiful Romanesque-Byzantine church before setting off again by train for Saint-Malo. Here it is at last, this promenade du Sillon voted France’s most beautiful beach several times over, and its forest of breakwaters protecting the seawall from the force of the waves… Climb quickly to the rooftop of the Les Ambassadeurs hotel: like Jack and Rose in Titanic, lean against the rail to embrace the ocean! The view is breathtaking… Your night is booked in a hotel with the Accueil Vélo label, so you can be sure that you and your mounts will be well looked after!

Saint-Malo in the time of the great explorers

Day 4: Discover the maritime history of the privateer city

In Saint-Malo, plunge into the era of the great explorers. Do you know the
discoverer of Canada? His name was Jacques Cartier, he was from Saint Malo and his story
is told to you in his manor house at Limoëlou, refurbished in the style of the 16th century. The spirit of adventure still floats through the streets of the inner city. Privateers and discoverers like you dreamt of looking out to sea from the ramparts that encircle the old town. Maybe right where you stopped, who knows? You need to get lost in the narrow streets, tread the cobblestones of the roi®, and pass under the arches to appreciate the soul of Saint Malo. Before setting off again, why not try one last experience with Hugo Besnier, who is passionate about the high tides, or Sensations Littoral, for a memorable fishing trip? Both are guaranteed to fill your head with memories, and your heart with sea spray…
